The first floor of the building caught fire by 1.15 pm on Thursday, but no one was injured. "People evacuated themselves on seeing the fire, so no one was hurt. The extent of damage to property has not been ascertained yet. Electric short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire," said A R Infant, DGP (Fire and Emergency Services).

Fifteen fire fighting vehicles worked on the site, and the fire was brought under control by 3.30 pm. "Initially we had some difficulty in getting into the building as there was dense smoke, and because the staircase was blocked by shoes and other materials," said B K Hampagol, Deputy Director (Technical) at the Fire department.

The shop carries products including shoes, bags and umbrellas made of materials like plastic, cotton, polythene etc.
