ON A 5000 KM WALK

Youth take an 'honest step' for zero corruption

A group of youngsters are walking for over 5000 kms across India urging citizens to be honest. They will walk in Bengaluru on January 8.

By G Pallavi Rao

We, the Proud Indians, are a group of young, regular Indians with regular aspirations who deeply believe that an honest and strong India will be possible only when each of us is willing to strive in that direction.

Proud Indians is a small group from Hyderabad from varied backgrounds. Through the walk they aim to inspire citizens to be honest at a personal level, to help tackle corruption. The group started their walk from Kanyakumari on December 18th. In the first segment of the walk from December 18th-31st, they covered 500 kms in Kerala . On January 1st, they started the second segment of the walk, from Nanjangud in Mysore to Chennai.

En route they will reach Bangalore on January 6th night and hold a 5-km walk near Cubbon Park on January 8th. Those interested can join the group on the Cubbon Road walk, or even join them for the rest of the journey. Proud Indians will reach New Delhi in April, and plan to organise a Zero Corruption Day on April 8th across the country.

Here is the tentative schedule of the walk as per the group's website: zerocorruptionday.com

To translate this belief into reality, we have embarked on a long, arduous journey from Kanyakumari to New Delhi spanning 15 states, covering over 5500kms. The journey we call 'Honest Steps', is just as difficult as our belief in a corruption-free India. In the last 15 days, we have covered over 450kms by foot, we have met more than 2500 people and we have walked with hundreds. We have slept in petrol bunks, endured hunger and mosquito bites, and we have endured blisters on the soles of our feet, many firsts that we are definitely not accustomed to.

Our resolve to walk on despite these difficulties has been nourished by people who have joined their footsteps with ours. And we believe that this energy will help us bring a corruption-free India, which each one of us dreams of.

We will be in Bangalore on 8th morning at Cubbon Park, and we wish to walk a few honest steps with you all. Your steps in solidarity will give us the necessary strength to carry on.

I congratulate the Honest Steps team for what they are doing, especially living under 32 / day to get a taste of poverty. I hope at least 10 % students in Bangalore, are aware of and participate in the event on Jan8 at Cubbon park. Thanks to the CITIZEN Matters team for reporting on this
