Around mid August this year, 21 volunteers from 14 countries arrived in southern India to work and learn from marginalized communities about their challenges pertinent to health and sanitation. They were part of "Health on Stage", a six week project where they learnt to use forum theatre to initiate simultaneous dialogues on public health in low income areas of Bangalore, Mysore and Chennai. And on 30th September, the 3 groups of participants, their trainers and faciliators gathered in Bangalore to share their experiences with healthcare professionals, media persons and theatre artists.
It is well known that water related illnesses are the bane of economically backward parts of urban and rural India. These arise mainly due to unhygienic habits such as open defecation and garbage dumping particularly near sources of water. "Women in the self-help group (SHG) that I am part of discuss and try to resolve these issues. But they…

Last Saturday evening (23rd April 2011), around thirty IT/ITeS Employees gathered under the banner of IT and ITeS Employee Centre (ITEC) in front of Bangalore's Town Hall amidst heavy and incessant rain to condole the shocking suicide of Prabhakar. The deceased was a thirty eight year old who had been working in the information technology industry for over a decade. The late Prabhakar had apparently left a note stating that he was resorting to the extreme step as he was unable to cope with the severe stress that his job was causing him.
ITEC has decided to set up an Employee Helpline Centre where IT/ITeS Employees can seek counseling and professional assistance from a group of specialists including counselors, psychiatrists, legal and other health experts. Further details are available here.

But sometimes do not enjoy these privileges. Actually, some of them barely survive. Or do not all. I am referring to India's small farmers who commit suicide.
So why do our agriculturists and sericulturists take their lives? As they are often deep in debt. Is that all? Insufficient availability or access to institutional credit, i.e., minimal bank loans is a major cause. Unfortunately, banks which were set up to support poor farmers, do not! So the agriculturists borrow from private moneylenders and microfinance institutions at high interest rates.
Climatic changes result in crop failure or minimal yield. And sudden alterations in economic policies reduce the returns on their produce. These factors keep the farmers indebted. Importantly, statistics of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) quoted by various news reports state that over 2 lakh farmers have committed suicide since 1997. These…
