On Republic day, Kuvempu Nagar RWA (KRWA) organized a flag hoisting ceremony at Flag Post, 13th Cross, BTM 2nd Stage. A M Nadaf of BMTC presided over the function and addressed the gathering.
As part of our annual day, cultural programmes were organised the same evening at IWWA hall, 7th Main. Chief Guest for this occasion was Prof. Bhuvaneshwar Babu of RV College of Engineering.
Children in the age group 3-8 years enacted a play about Panchabhootas (the five elements). This was followed by dance and skit programmes. All children were given participation prizes.
Panduranga, an autorickshaw driver has displayed exemplary honesty by handing over an amount of five lakh rupees, which one of his passengers had left behind in his autorickshaw. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Sonia Narang gave this JP Nagar resident a letter of appreciation and Mayor Sharadamma gave him a cash reward of `25,000.

Manjari Ladies Association held its New Year Party, followed by a fashion show, on January 9th at Kalanjali Showroom, Jayanagar. The fashion show was organised by Garden City College. Mangalore Jewels, JP Nagar showcased its products at the event.
Aim of the show was to bring fashion consiousness among ladies irrespective of their age, and to encourage students to model for designer saree shops. Members enjoyed the event. Membership to the association is open now.

In Recyclathon Awards, part of Bengaluru Recycling Habba, Mantri Tranquil apartment in Kanakpura road won the championship for Best Waste Wise Apartment (above 250 units category). Around 2009, a few residents here studied different recycling models across the city and designed their own version.
Their organic compost unit now generates about 3000 kgs of compost every month, which is used in the gardens within the complex or sold outside. Residents also segregate dry waste into five categories. which is collected and recycled by the NGO Saahas.
Dr N Ramchandran, one of the project initiators, says, "Of the 710 residents, 60% are segregating already. Monthly operation cost of the compost unit is Rs 20,000-24,000, which is covered by sale of compost and dry waste." In each block 2-3 volunteer manage the system.

JP Nagar Citizens' Association (JPNCA) on 9th October celebrated its 35th Anniversary at VET School Auditorium. A little over a 100 members gathered at 530 pm in the evening as three senior past presidents of the association - Colonel (Retd) G K Burli, V S Rao and Bhoja Shetty were honoured on the occasion.
Film actor Avinash, his wife and television actor Malavika Avinash, who live in Rajarajeshwarinagar, presided as Chief Guests while Dr Y L Rajashekar of Shekar Nethralaya was the Guest of Honour. After close to three years of delay, a 66 KVA substation will finally be constructed in Jaynagar 3rd Block by Karnatka Power Transmicssion Company Limited (KPTCL). The old BESCOM office in 3rd Block, near NMKRV Women's College will be demolished to make way for the substation.
Sales of khadi dresses surge during the month of October. Khadi stores offer discounts of up to 40% on clothes. One such shop is the Khadi Sadan in Jaynagar 3rd Block, opposite Bata showroom.
The shop sells readymade dresses (shirts, kurtas, sarees, shawls etc) and cloth materials of khadi and silk, carpets and rugs. Products such as herbal soaps, toothpaste, aloe vera juice, gaumutra (cow urine used for medicinal purposes) are also sold.
Vinod K G, 32, who has been running the shop for eight years, says that they sell more than 75 varieties of products, sourced from various co-operative societies from around the country.They offer 40% percent discount on apparels and dress materials from August to November. For two years now, Nagaraj Ananth, 43, a scientist at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has being going to schools and colleges on Saturdays and introducing children to the fascinating world of satellites and space travel. With the aid of videos, he explains the functions and different kinds of satellites, famous astronauts of the world and concepts related to space travel. A resident of JP Nagar, Ananth started a science club called ‘Galileo Science Club’.
Ananth, a diploma holder in electronics and communication and a scientist at ISRO for 22 years, was inspired after he volunteered with another club called ‘Raja Ramanna Science Club’, which conducts programmes to popularise science.
"I love interacting with kids and it is a treat to watch them discover more about astronomy. I wanted to do something exclusively about satellites and rockets, so I started Galileo Science Club”, he says.

JP Nagar Citizens’ Association (JPNCA)has a new set of office bearers. The 15 members were elected during a general body meeting on 26th June and 27th June. JPNCA has one thousand members from six phases of JP Nagar. The new President M A Chowdappa succeeds Dr D B Meundi, a two-time President. The office bearers are elected for a term of two years and can be re-elected for a maximum of another term. Chowdappa, 71, a former advisor in the Ministry of Telecom has been living in JP Nagar for the past 10 years. A BTM resident, Kumar Lakshmikanthan, 72, a retired Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) employee, wrote to us about the pathetic state of footpath on 7th cross and 7th main BTM II Stage. “The footpaths have been paved with expensive cobble stone but most of it is occupied by street hawkers and shops. Pedestrians are forced to use the road,” he says. Raw materials for building construction too are dumped on the footpath.
When Citizen Matters contacted ward councilor G N R Babu, he feigned helplessness on the issue. “I have complained several times to the Health department about this. The hawkers keep coming back even after having been evicted many times.” He says that he will look in to the issue again and resolve it. ?

A new bus stop was inaugurated near the Sarakki Market on 22nd June. Residents of 1st Phase, JP Nagar (Shakambari Nagar ward) can soon hope to be better connected to the rest of Bangalore.
B Somashekhar, councillor of ward 179 said that three new bus routes will be introduced to provide for better connectivity. "There will be three buses to Majestic, two to Shivajinagar and one to KR Market." The area now has two buses (route 2A) plying to Kempegowda Bus Terminal.
Also present at the inauguration was MLA B N Vijay Kumar.

Residents of 8th phase JP Nagar still have no respite from the deep trenches dug by the BWSSB to lay water pipelines. Kapil Raizada, a resident of nearby H M World City had earlier written to Citizen Matters on this issue and the piece was published in the 9th April issue of Citizen Matters. The residents had a harrowing summer due to the dust kicked up due to the digging. The monsoon has added another kind of woe as the mud roads have turned slushy and with trenches dug up on the sides, they have become a hazard to commuters in the area.

For the last two months, young recruits from BBMP (Bommanahalli Zone) have been actively canvassing for waste segregation at source in large apartment complexes along Bannerghatta Road and parts of JP Nagar. The recruits in their late twenties or early thirties have been appointed to the posts of Deputy Environment Officers and Environmental Engineers.
Santosh Kumar, one of the Deputy Environment Officers, a chemical engineering graduate in his late twenties says that it was not a conscious decision by the BBMP to send young officers to canvas for waste segregation. "BBMP has been recruiting new officers hence there is an inflow of young blood," he says.
