I am a senior citizen, who has been a resident of Bangalore for the pas t45 years. It pains me to read of the callous treatment meted to our trees, who provide us with shade and beauty in our lives. We often read of trees falling due to the passage of storms.Could some of these trees have been saved that fate,if we as the citizens of Bangalore had ensured just one measure-that a space of three feet in circumference around the trees all over Bangalore had been kept free of cement or concrete??The other measure is to ensure that termites do not eat away the bark, initially and subsequently, the vitals of these lofty and silent friends of man? To illustrate-a lofty tree on the CMR Road in Kalyannagar, opposite the Diabetic Centre and next to a mosque,is being eaten by termites ,with noone doing anything about it. This could result in this majestic being, one day falling on-a roof, the road or some poor unsuspecting wayfarer!!May I request your org to help this tree in particular and all trees on our roads in general, to be cared for so that they too can take care of us. One way is to put in place a circular iron grill surrounding each tree, so that the tree is able to breathe, and obtain water, without any interference. Raghu Rajan
