There is an urgent need to take a relook into the building bye laws of BBMP which does not stand for the need of the hour. Land, a natural resourse is scarce and needs to be utilized in a better way. With the city growing in all directions and with no land some of the bye laws need to be relooked into. One example to quote is that a open staircase cannot be constructed in the space meant for SET BACK. It should form part and parcel of the building. But what we see is every other building in Bangalore has an open staircase amounting to violation of building bye laws. The officials of the BBMP turn a blind eye for a "FEE". Almost all open staircases are violations. What we cannot follow, should be not be a rule. Amend it and charge a legal fee for constructing a Open Staircase. Staircase is just a passage to reach the other floors. Nobody lives in it. It does not obstruct others. There are many such bye laws which need to be amended to suit the present day needs. Now that BBMP has a new set of Corporators under the leadership of dynamic Mayor, an able and honest Commissioner they should all sit together and amend the age old building bye laws
