An odissi recital - Ganga - by Sarita Misra
The curse of Kapilamuni turned entire sagarvamsha into ashes. The great great grandson Bhagiratha wanted sagarvamshajas to attain salvation. He prayed Brahma and learnt that if ganga's holy water touches the ashes, their souls will attain salvation. Bhagiratha prayed Ganga to descend. She agreed to descend and wanted some one to sustain her fall. On Brahma's suggestion, Bhagiratha prayed Shiva to absorb ganga's fall on the earth. When Ganga was about to descend, she noticed Shiva sitting with his hair open. She laughed aloud ridiculing him and remarked that he does not realise her shakti. On hearing this Shiva became angry and when Ganga desecended on him, he knotted his hair with Ganga trapped inside. Bhagiratha, realising that decended Ganga did not touch the earth, prayed Shiva to release her. Moved by Bhagiratha's prayer,he released Ganga and allowed her flow out drop by drop. Ganga entered Kapilamuni ashram and all Sagaravamshajas attained salvation. Today, Ganga is a place to dispose dead bodies and waste materials, thus polluting her. She who had come to serve the community, now prays for her own survival.
Saumansa-The Flowering Tree - by Chitra Chandrasekhar Dasarathy
Based on a Kannada folk tale this work narrates a simple yet poignant story. It is the tale of a young girl with a special gift. She lives to dance and when she does, she can become a tree with flowers. Her flowers are beautiful and they are fragrant. The fragrance travels far. A man falls in love with the fragrance and follows its trail back to the woman. There he sees her dancing and becoming a tree. Joyously they reciprocate each other's love. Viyoga, (separation) however is imminent. When it comes the woman is left by herself and at the mercy of avaricious strangers who crave for the flowers for their beauty and fragrance. They have no care for the soul and spirit of the woman or the vulnerability of the tree she has become. She is forcibly turned into a log of wood, neither woman nor tree, who can neither dance nor flower. Meanwhile, the man in his search for his beloved has lost his mind. He does not recognize her when he literally stumbles upon her. She must now revive him with her fragrance and touch. Restored to his senses he brings her back to herself-ready to dance and flower again. The tale forms the basis for an exploration into a world of ideas. Of ability, of excellence epitomized as flowering, of empathy, of sensitivity, of insensitivity, of greed, of memory and touch and finally of regeneration and resurgence
